Celtic Cross History
70Celtic Cross History
The Celtic cross history is very interesting and one that people may not realize is so storied of a past or long of a past. When most people think of the Celtic cross though they think of the beautiful Emerald Isle that is Ireland and how the land used to be ruled by the Celts. Then after they breeze over Ireland they then consider Saint Patrick who helped spread Christianity to Ireland. The Celtic cross though dates back even further than Saint Patrick. The Celtic cross was a pagan symbol by many people during that time period and even before that time period. The Celtic cross history that you might not have realized or seen before though can be read about here.
The Celtic cross was not seen as a Christian symbol until after the Celts who at the time were viewed as Pagans decided that it was time for them to convert to Chritianity. The conversion to Christianity though did take time and the one legend that people say helped to encourage the Celts to convert to Christianity was by the combining of the Sun cross and the Latin cross into one. Saint Patrick in the legend is the one that is credited with coming up with this idea, but that is legend and we all know that legends can be wrong, but it is so popular that it can be hard to ignore. The legend goes that Saint Patrick or even Saint Delcan combined one of the pagan symbols for the sun with the Latin cross and made them into one. The pagans viewed the sun as the life giving force which went hand in hand with the life giving force that is present in Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and salvation. By combining these two elements the pagans were able to see that Jesus gives life and when they seen the sun on the cross is made it easier for them to comprehend the comparison. .
Many people might be questioning how is it possible that the Celtic cross is so old, but that is easy to explain as you can see that it gained more prevelance and was spread by the Irish monks.
While many people believe in the very popular legend of the Celtic cross origin it is still being debated about the exact origin of the Celtic cross. The popular legend though is one that has been embraced as one of the more credible origins of the Celtic cross that we see today. With the shear beauty and history that exists though in the Celtic cross I am sure if your like me you will enjoy having a Celtic cross of your own to reflect on this long and storied history. Then while you are pondering on the Celtic crosses history you can easily remember as the Celts did the redemption and life giving force that is available in Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior.
